Blog Post: Debt Management – Seeking Help Without Shame
💡 "Acknowledging
you need help is the first step toward financial freedom."
Yesterday, I mentioned that I signed up with StepChange,
a debt charity in the UK. At first, I felt ashamed. I worried that asking for
help would define me, that it meant I had somehow failed. I even started the
application, deleted it, and then came back to it—only to leave it 95% complete.
Then, StepChange sent me an email. That email changed
everything.
They introduced me to something called Breathing Space,
a government-backed scheme that gives you 60 days of protection from
creditors—no interest, no harassment, just time to breathe and get a plan
in place. They worked with me to create a realistic repayment plan based on my
budget and income. Now, I pay them, and they handle my creditors on my behalf.
The best part? I no longer lose sleep over my finances.
The Truth About Debt and Shame
For a long time, I was in denial about my financial
situation. Pride kept me from seeking help sooner. But here’s what I’ve
learned:
- Shame doesn’t pay the bills.
- Pride won’t fix your bank balance.
- Taking action will.
Like many others, I was doing fine until life changed—maternity
leave, becoming a single parent, and unexpected expenses. Suddenly, I was scraping
by, exhausted from trying to stretch every penny. I didn’t want to live like
that anymore.
I haven’t told my friends or family about my decision to
seek help—and that’s okay. You don’t have to tell anyone either. This is
your journey, and taking control of your finances is an act of strength,
not weakness.
